Tuesday, August 8, 2017

Pre-meeting presentation: 6-6:45 pm
Q&A session: 6:45-7 pm
Main meeting: 7-9 pm

The Point at C. C. Young, 4847 W. Lawther Dr., Dallas (map)

Join us for our August monthly meeting! The main meeting starts at 7 and will feature club announcements, Bee Plant of the Month, Book of the Month, In the Hive beekeeping current events for June, snacks, door prizes and our main attraction: Fights About Mites presented by TV Bees president Ryan Giesecke.

“Fights About Mites” is Ryan’s attempt at a somewhat satirical take on the fingerpointing that can result from different styles of varroa mite management in the beekeeping community. His presentation will take us on a tour of the varroa blame game, from the historical to the present day, from the rational to the absurd, and attempt to show how much we can stand to learn from a friendly examination of opposing approaches and perspectives. In the process we will build a solid groundwork of knowledge and understanding on which to base our decisions regarding dealing with mites in our hives.

More about Ryan: Ryan is a beekeeper, bee educator, and all-round bee enthusiast. He is active in the Texas Master Beekeeper Program, manages a half dozen beeyards around the metroplex, and runs Honey Bee Relocation Services, a local company specializing in bee-friendly removals which take feral bees from problem situations and put them into productive management.

This month we will also have a brief pre-meeting “Trophallaxis in the Theater” presentation about solar wax melters. We will talk about how to get — or build — your own wax melter and how to use it. A great topic for newer beekeepers who might be wondering what to do about all the leftover wax from honey harvests and removing burr combs.

Want to help out at a meeting? We are always looking for folks to bring snacks and give brief talks on bee plants and books. Click here to see openings and sign up –> TVBA sign up lists

How to find us: Go in the main entrance at The Point and turn left. The main meeting and Q&A session are held in the large meeting room which is the first room on your left. Pre-meeting presentations are held in the small theater at the end of the same hallway, also on the left side. See you there!
