This month we are pleased to have Becky Bender speaking to us about floral resources and planting for bees. Her presentation will discuss what we can do in our yards to attract and provide for bees, and will even explore analysis of pollen content in area honey samples that has been done by A&M’s Dr. Vaughn Bryant.

Becky Bender is an R.N. with a Master’s degree in Science. As a Texas Master Naturalist, she became especially interested in honey plants 7 years ago when she and her husband began hobby beekeeping. She manages her own land and yard for wildlife, honeybees, and other pollinators. Becky also contributes “The Buds and the Bees” column for the Texas Beekeeping Association Journal.

In addition to our main presentation, we will have our “Bee Plant of the Month”, “Bee Book of the Month”, and our monthly “In the Hive”.

The pre-meeting class this month is “So You Think You Want Bees, Part 1. ” The series is designed to talk aspiring beekeepers through the considerations involved in potentially starting up their beekeeping adventure next Spring and help you decide whether you’re ready to take the plunge into beekeeping. Part 1 of this class will cover reasons to want to keep bees, concerns and considerations, time/space/monetary investment, working with neighbors, as well as local and state regulations. The class starts at 6pm, presented by TVBA president Ryan Giesecke. Class is $10 per family for non-members, $5 per family for TVBA members, cash or check at the door.

Want to help out at a meeting? We are always looking for folks to bring snacks and give brief talks on bee plants and books. Click here to see openings and sign up –> TVBA sign up lists

How to find us: Go in the main entrance at The Point and turn left. The main meeting and Q&A session are held in the large meeting room which is the first room on your left. Pre-meeting presentations are held in the small theater at the end of the same hallway, also on the left side.

Our meetings are always free and open to the public. Feel free to attend even if you don’t know anything about beekeeping–it’s a great chance to meet people and see what it’s all about!
