Scholarship Application

The Award

  • A one year membership in the Trinity Valley Beekeepers Association
  • A beginning beekeeper class (20 hrs.) registration and textbook
  • A set of woodenware for a beehive
  • A nucleus “nuc” or package of bees for the hive
  • Beekeeping gear: suit, gloves, hive tool and smoker
  • Mentoring by a TVBA member for one year

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be between the ages of 12 and 17 by November 1st
  • The applicant must be willing to travel to monthly meetings and classes
  • The applicant must be currently enrolled in public, private, or home school
  • The applicant must have permission and agreement from parent or guardian
  • The applicant must live in an area where residential beekeeping is legal
  • The application must be submitted to the TVBA postmarked no later than November 1st

Requirements

  • The recipient will be expected to attend at least 75% of the meetings between the January and the December meetings and to present a short progress report of the activities to date
  • The recipient will keep a written record complete with dates, photos, and other pertinent data sufficient to substantiate a report book
  • Successful attendance and completion of the beekeeping class
  • A Certificate of Completion and full ownership of the colony and the equipment will be presented at the December meeting if the scholarship recipient has met all requirements
  • The recipient will be expected to work the Texas Beekeepers Association honey booth at the Texas state Fair
  • The recipient will be required to enter their honey in the TVBA September Honey tasting
  • He or she shall be expected to be of aid during the TVBA meetings and other activities in whatever way he or she is asked
  • The recipient will be required to arrive at the TVBA meeting place at 6:30 pm. Student must go through their hives before coming and be prepared to give a report about hive conditions
  • The recipient is required to act properly during TVBA meetings. No horse play etc. He/she is to help the meeting go smoothly and aid in any way possible
  • At the September TVBA meeting the recipient is required to present a pre-assigned topic that he/she has researched
  • The recipient is required to contact his/her mentor, not wait for the mentor to contact them

January

  • Start Scholarship record book, scrapbook or other form of program documentation; bring this record to every monthly meeting
  • Scholarship students will be expected to help in any way necessary at the monthly meeting.
  • TVBA monthly meeting at “The Point” on the campus of C.C. Young – 6:30 p.m.
  • First Bee Class

February

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • Bee Class
  • Build and paint woodenware to return to March class

March

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • Bee Class.
  • Pick up supers and protective equipment at class
  • Build supers

April

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • Bee Class
  • Bring protective equipment to class and pick up bees
  • Feed bees
  • End of April check to make sure hive is queenright

May

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • Bee Class
  • Bring protective gear to class
  • From this time forward any of the scholarship students may be called upon during the monthly meetings to give a report about his/her bees.
  • Contact and get together with your mentor. If you have any questions about your hive, contact your mentor.
  • Check your hive weekly.
  • Add honey supers when needed

June

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • Be in your hive weekly
  • Stay in contact with your mentor
  • You will be assigned a topic to research and present at the Sept TVBA meeting

July

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • Get honey extracted
  • Save a jar of honey for the August TVBA honey tasting
  • Stay in contact with your mentor

August

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • Honey tasting at this month’s meeting; bring a jar of your honey for tasting
  • Stay in contact with your mentor
  • Encourage others to apply for next year’s Scholarship Program

September

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • The scholarship youth are responsible for this month’s program: 5-10 min. presentations
  • Make sure you signed up for State Fair
  • Have your mentor help you get your bees ready for fall honey flow

October

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • Prepare bees for winter
  • Volunteer at the Texas State Fair TBA Honey Booth
  • Contact mentor to be sure hives are ready for winter

November

  • TVBA monthly meeting – 6:30 p.m.
  • Bring completed record book for club to see

December

  • TVBA monthly meeting: Christmas Party – 6:30 p.m. help with set-up
  • If all requirements have been met you will receive a certificate of completion and hive ownership at this meeting.
